"BACK TO THE ROOTS"**
October 25, 2024 – December 29, 2024
Manhattan Beach, CA, September 20, 2024 – Homeira Goldstein and TIME4ART with support of the Manhattan Beach Art Center are thrilled to present a solo exhibition “Back To Roots” by Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary Argentinian artist Marisa Caichiolo, a meaningful and impactful exhibition deeply exploring and celebrating themes of identity, heritage, and the powerful connection to the land and the stories that shape us. Marisa's work serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of honoring our roots and the cultural narratives that ground us.
The exhibition presents a compelling textile installation that intertwines large garments with the evocative strength of ancient European columns symbolizing the profound connection between Marisa’s South American roots and her memories. These monumental textile pieces represent the support system for her personal world and belongings, embodying the interwoven nature of her identity.
In addition, the exhibition features large-scale photography, printed textiles, and immersive video installations that incorporate natural elements such as soil, grass, and roots. These elements invite viewers to journey through Marisa's exploration of history and identity, offering a visceral connection to the earth and her ancestral past.
"Back to the Roots" intricately weaves the threads of Caichiolo’s European ancestry with her South American heritage, creating a dialogue between continents and histories, and inviting a reflective experience on the power of cultural legacy.
Through her own journey, Caichiolo connects with a universal exploration of belonging. Her work creates a bridge between the past and the present, reminding us that roots run deep, and from them, beautiful stories continue to grow. Each piece is a testament to the enduring impact of heritage, identity, and the collective memory that shapes us all.
Caichiolo is not only a multidisciplinary artist but also a curator. She studied art history and curatorial studies, holding a PhD in art history and psychology from the University of Buenos Aires. Her research delves into the impact of social and political changes on society, with a focus on cultural exchanges and the evolving relationship between theory and practice. Through her art and academic work, Caichiolo brings forth a nuanced perspective that enriches her creative explorations.
Her curatorial projects have been shown internationally, including; Kirchner Cultural Center, Buenos Aires, (Argentina); DOX Center for Contemporary Arts, Prague (Czech Republic); Frost Science Museum, Miami (USA); PVAC Palos Verdes Art Center, Palos Verdes (California); Building Bridges Art Foundation, Los Angeles (California); KATARA Cultural Center, Doha (Qatar); Sharjah Museum of Contemporary Art, Dubai (United Arab Emirates); Anaheim Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center, Anaheim (California); Telefónica Art Foundation, Santiago(Chile); among others.
She is the founder of Building Bridges International Art Foundation an international non-profit organization based in Santa Monica, Los Angeles County. The foundation is conceived to be a platform for critical thinking and researching; local and international programs in Los Angeles; art residencies; and education programs among others.
She was part of the curatorial team for several international biennials, such as the Casablanca Biennale, Morocco; Sharjah Biennale, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates; Biennial of the Americas, Denver, Colorado; among others. She is also an active board member for Bugatti Foundation, Italy; Now Art LA, Los Angeles; and the Advisory Board of the DAP Program at The Broad, Los
Angeles.
Currently, Caichiolo is exhibiting a new project about memory at the LUM Museum and MAC Museum of Contemporary Art in Lima, Peru, as part of the Video art Biennial. She has participated in numerous biennials, including the Beijing Biennial, Shanghai Biennial, Bangladesh Biennial, Curitiba Biennial in Brazil, and the SUR Biennial in Los Angeles.
Recently, Caichiolo had a solo exhibition—a retrospective of her work from the past two decades—at the MUSA Museum in Mexico, which attracted a record number of 31,000 visitors. She has also presented solo projects at the Sharjah Contemporary Art Museum, Thousand Oaks Museum in California, Tagore Cultural Center in India, and Katara Cultural Center in Qatar, as well as group exhibitions worldwide.
Marisa reflects on her two-decade-long artistic journey: “Over the last twenty years, regardless of its variations, my work has focused on reflecting on the skin. Skin as a metaphor, as a shield, as a mediating element and a support for a nomadic identity—always changing, always expectant, exposed to interaction with others and the construction of my feminine and feminist self. During this process, I have incorporated the use of different materials into my artistic practice, finding them more malleable for transporting the pieces. Time has borne witness to my work's metamorphosis, which has acquired a certain levity in terms of materials, thickness, and volume, but has also become more intense and critical from a conceptual point of view.” — Marisa Caichiolo
Envisioned by Homeira Goldstein, “Back To Roots” exhibition is presented by TIME4ART, a non-profit art educational organization in Manhattan Beach, California with the mission of enhancing cultural art awareness in the South Bay and Greater Los Angeles.
