Manhattan Beach, CA, Sept 1, 2021–Homeira Goldstein and TIME4ART with support of the Manhattan Beach Art Center are thrilled to present “Beyond Shapes” an exhibition featuring a collection of paintings, metal cut outs and drawings by Manhattan Beach artist, David A Peters.
Born in Tyler, Texas into a large Lebanese American family, a Born in Tyler, Texas into a large Lebanese American family, a resident of Manhattan Beach with a large studio in Inglewood, David’s work is inspired by his encountered reflective state of mind, which was ignited, intrigued and influenced by a collection of rather rustic works and images on paper from Rajasthan, India used as meditative symbols. Obsessed with the experience, he started working in small formats on paper and wood. He has since transcended to large acrylic painting and mixed media on canvas with expanded thoughts and influences. Without predetermined ideas, David’s work spontaneously embraces inspirations to guide him to structures and shapes welcoming unexpected discoveries inherent in the painting process, conveying experiences, which examine emotional process of splendor, spirituality, and achievement - carrying the audience within their own deep possibilities of reaching out for beyond shapes and higher planes.
Peters states: Ever since I can remember, I have been intrigued by shapes and symbEver since I can remember, I have been intrigued by shapes and symbols. While I have drawn sketched and painted scenes and people, much of my work has been around shapes, symbols and doodles, mainly when I was not thinking about them. As I have developed as an artist there has been a continuing theme around these shapes, but just as importantly about allowing the unconscious to guide me.
My art is not about the results. For me, the investigation and unexpected discoveries inherent in the painting process take precedent over the end product. I work intuitively without preconceived ideas. I just float around the edges waiting for the courage and inspiration to guide me to an image. In these most recent pieces, I continue to be intrigued with shapes and symbols, also with the juxtaposition of their simplicity and their complexity.
Peters attended the University of Notre Dame for two years and graduated from Pomona College in Claremont, California with a degree in economics and a master’s degree in urban studies from Occidental College. While having a successful real estate career, he stayed involved with community work and continued his education with classes in poetry and art. Then, he started to pursue his artistic interests studying visual arts with the renowned artist Tom Wudl at his studio downtown Los Angeles for the last 16 years. Later, he became a member of StudioEleven, a group of independent artists who also work and study together at Wudl’s studio. Influenced by Richard Diebenkorn, Ellsworth Kelly, Louis Bourgeois, Joseph Albers and Hilma Af Klint to mention a few, his works have been shown in number of group exhibitions, making “Beyond Shapes” David’s first solo show.
Envisioned by Homeira Goldstein, Beyond Shapes features the artist’s collection of works inspired by his perpetual fascination for shapes and anticipation of somewhat unknown final results. The exhibition invites you to view his world through ever expanding and seemingly inexhaustible exploration and expression of shapes, lines, characters and influences.
This exhibition is presented by TIME4ART, a non-profit art educational organization in Manhattan Beach, California with the mission of enhancing cultural art awareness in the South Bay and Greater Los Angeles.
